You don't have to step into the ring to get a great workout. Boxing classes are becoming the norm in many health clubs and fitness centres on the Gold Coast.

Participants are learning what boxing enthusiasts have known for years--that boxers are some of the most highly conditioned athletes competing in sports today, and that if you follow some simple procedures, you can build stamina, tone your muscles and burn calories.

Classes are often called boxercise and surprisingly consisting of women.

Classes typically concentrate on pad work and sparring, which involves facing a partner and taking turns throwing punches and kicks that your partner blocks with mitts and shields.
A good instructor should walk around the class and correct technique as well as offer encouragement.
